Can a worn wood deck be restained, or does the old finish need to come off?
If the stain is faded along the path to your back door, a maintenance coat may be an option. If the finish is curling off in flakes, the quote needs to account for removing failed material. If a step or board has moved underfoot, pause the finish project and have the deck assessed first.

Compare the worn path with a protected spot
If the deck is safe to access, photograph the worn traffic lane and a sheltered patch where more of the original coating remains. Include the stairs, floorboards and rails you want finished. They may not all have the same coating or need the same preparation.
A faded brown surface alone cannot tell the painter what was applied. Look for an old can label, invoice or product code. If the finish is unknown, say so. Ask the painter to identify a compatible system for the existing surface and for horizontal wood people walk on. An exterior coating selected for the railing isn't automatically suitable for the floor.
Ask which layer can stay
For Woodluxe Solid 694, Benjamin Moore distinguishes weathered stain that still adheres from stain that is peeling or flaking. The first can be recoated after the specified preparation; the second needs removal. This product is opaque: it hides the grain pattern but leaves the texture visible. If you want the grain to show, tell the painter before approving this type of finish.
Have the quote name the areas that need removal, the areas that can be recoated and how the finished sections will look together. If neither the old product nor its condition is clear, ask what the painter needs to assess before fixing the price. Leave removal of unknown coatings to the professional.
Treat movement or damaged wood as a different job
Even BEHR's Smooth ADVANCED DeckOver, a coating sold for weathered surfaces, calls for replacing rotting or unstable deck boards before coating. A thicker finish is not a repair for a loose step or a weakened board.
NADRA's deck safety checklist flags split or decaying wood, loose fasteners, sagging and insecure rails for attention. If you have already noticed movement, sagging or a loose rail, keep people off the deck until a qualified deck professional assesses it. You don't need to test it again or probe the wood to request help.
Plan the route back into the house
Ask when the next coat can go on, when you can walk on the deck, and when furniture can go back. At 77°F and 50% relative humidity, Benjamin Moore lists four hours before recoating with Solid 694 and 48 hours before putting furniture back and returning the deck to service. Cooler or more humid conditions can extend drying time. BEHR’s DeckOver instructions say not to apply it if rain is forecast within 24 hours. Use the chosen product’s schedule.
If these steps are your usual entrance, agree on another safe route before work starts. For a Coast & Craft scope review, send the deck photos, old finish information if available, which boards or rails concern you, and any access limits. Confirm whether finishing can be considered or a deck specialist needs to visit first.
