Where can my old mattress go before my new bed arrives in Irvine?
If a retailer is delivering your new mattress in Irvine, ask for old-mattress pickup while you place the order. If you’re just clearing a bedroom or replacing the frame, start with whoever manages your trash collection. A house with individual carts and an apartment with shared bins can have different pickup dates on the same street.

If a store is delivering the new mattress
CalRecycle says a retailer delivering a new mattress in California must offer to collect a used mattress at no additional charge. For delivery by the store or its contracted delivery crew, the offer applies at delivery. If a parcel carrier brings the new mattress in a box, the retailer must offer to arrange collection within 30 days of delivery. Ask the store for the pickup date before you count on having floor space that evening.
Tell the store how many items you have, which floor they’re on and whether there’s a box spring. Ask where the crew expects to find them. Delivery and setup charges can still apply. Bye Bye Mattress also explains that a retailer can decline an old mattress if contamination poses a safety or health risk. Describe the condition when scheduling. If recycling matters to you, ask the retailer where its crew takes the mattress.
If you need Irvine bulky-item collection
For a single-family home on WM cart service, call 949-642-1191. Irvine’s agreement includes four free bulky collections per calendar year, with up to four bulky items per collection. When you call, list the mattress, box spring and any frame parts individually. Ask how WM counts those pieces, which items it will accept, and the date and location for setting them out.
At a participating apartment or condo complex with shared service, the property manager coordinates a monthly collection date and a designated spot. Contact the manager before moving anything outdoors. Ask which day to bring the mattress down and whether you need to reserve the service elevator. An extra collection outside the building’s schedule may carry a charge.
Before loading a mattress for a county drop-off
The county lists two residential mattress recycling sites. Its November 7 update showed public self-haul was open at Olinda Alpha in Brea and closed at Prima Deshecha in San Juan Capistrano. Frank R. Bowerman in Irvine serves commercial customers. Access can change. Before loading anything, check the county’s Landfill Operations & Public Updates page linked below. For mattress acceptance questions, call OC Waste & Recycling at 714-834-4000 during business hours.
When a residential site is accepting mattresses, eligible mattress-only loads are free. Standard mattresses and box springs qualify. Other trash in the load triggers disposal fees, so make a separate plan for the frame. The county excludes wet, heavily soiled and bedbug-infested items from recycling. Describe any condition concerns to your hauler when arranging collection.
Put the changeover on one calendar
A delivery on Friday and a collection on Monday can work if the old mattress has a dry place to wait. Write down three details before arranging assembly.
- Who takes each piece, who moves it from the bedroom to the pickup spot, and on which date?
- Where will the incoming boxes and the old mattress fit while keeping doors and walkways clear?
- When will the room be clear for the new frame? For an assembly request, send Coast & Craft the frame model, that date and whether the old frame still needs dismantling.
