Adding a ceiling medallion? Check the canopy and center opening first

A ceiling medallion can frame a pendant neatly, but its center must work with the fixture’s canopy—the cover against the ceiling. A large decorative disk can still have an opening that leaves a gap around that cover. Compare the product drawings before choosing the pattern.

Compare three measurements

The outside diameter tells you how much ceiling the decoration occupies. The center opening tells you how much space sits around the fixture connection. The listed canopy limit tells you which size cover the manufacturer says its design accommodates.

For example, Ekena’s Attica CM18AT is 18 inches across, has a 4-inch center opening and projects ⅝ inch from the ceiling. Ekena lists it for canopies up to 5 inches. A round 4½-inch canopy centered over that opening would overlap it by ¼ inch on each side. Have the installer also check the canopy’s shape and how the added thickness affects its mounting.

View the outside size against the room in a scaled ceiling photo or sketch. Include nearby molding and other lights. If you want to cover an old paint outline, show its position relative to the fixture center so the installer can check the full perimeter.

Choose the construction around the existing fixture

Ekena’s standard medallion instructions include removal and reinstallation of an existing fixture. Include that handling in the plan for a one-piece medallion fitted behind the canopy.

A split design gives you two pieces to bring together around the center. Ekena’s Carton CM18CA2-05000, for example, is a two-piece medallion listed for canopies up to 5 inches. Ask whether that particular design can fit around your hanging fixture and whether its canopy will still need to be moved. Include the joint between the halves in the finishing discussion, especially with a smooth painted design.

Have the ceiling checked where the medallion will attach

An old paint ring and loose plaster need different preparation. Send a close photo of the area and describe any crumbling edges, movement or moisture staining. Ask which repairs are needed before the decoration is attached, including damage that will be hidden. For a stained ceiling, share what caused the moisture and what has been repaired.

Ekena requires a clean, dry installation surface. Its instructions also treat the medallion as decoration and require the light fixture and medallion to have independent support. Have a qualified electrician assess any fixture removal, refitting or electrical work.

Include the last coat and the final fit

For its urethane medallions, Ekena recommends painting before installation and touching up afterward. Agree on the color and sheen, who finishes any seams and fixing marks, and how much surrounding ceiling will be repainted. Include ceiling height and access in the request.

Before booking, confirm who handles the ceiling repair, medallion attachment, paint and any fixture work. Ask for the completed canopy fit to be checked after the decoration is in place. This lets the quote account for the full sequence around the light you already own.
